The Center for News Excellence and Engagement grew out of News Engagement Day, a national and global initiative to encourage news engagement; strengthen the belief that being informed is important and essential for a healthy democracy; increase public understanding about the process and principles of journalism; and reverse declining news consumption. News Engagement Day and the Center were proposed and developed by Paula Poindexter, the 2013-2014 AEJMC president.
In addition to a mobile platform for promoting the goals of News Engagement Day, the Center will emphasize improving the quality of news with special attention paid to news coverage of communities of color, women, and Millennials. The Center will also serve as a platform for strengthening relations between journalism and communications educators and all providers of news, including legacy, digital native, social media, and tech companies. Finally, the Center, which is administered by a director and advised by an editorial board with input from the News Engagement Day Committee, will use blog posts, multimedia, and social media to highlight news, issues, and research relevant to journalism excellence, news engagement, and journalism and communication education.
